Google’s Outbound Link Penalties: How to React without Overreacting

Penalties for links usually focus on the inbound kind. So Google’s recent spate of manual actions against websites for having “unnatural artificial, deceptive, or manipulative outbound links” was a surprise to many.  The quick version: This time, the search engine targeted sites linking out because the links looked like an attempt to boost the destination sites’ rankings in search results. Warning Signs That Penalties Loomed Just a few weeks before the penalties came down, Google noted that those receiving compensation for things such as product reviews needed to take steps to call out any links from their site to the product site, page or supplier. In a Webmaster Blog post, Google...

On average, we are subjected to 5,000 marketing messages per day. It’s therefore no surprise that if you try to recall a promotional email that you received yesterday, you’ll struggle. Research also estimates that a typical professional sends and receives 131 emails each day. Why Now, More Than Ever, SEO Is Not Just About Google

SEO is not just about Google! Yes, that’s right, I genuinely mean this and I’m going to stick to my word. It’s common practice for SEOs to invest all their time and energies into just one search engine, but this is a limited approach. The truth is that SEOs need to investigate other strategies for generating traffic which don’t rely purely on Google. And there’s one particularly keen insight that SEO  has uncovered that you need to pay attention to. With 4 paid ads on top, Google is setting itself up in the enviable position of being able to control 80% of the results above the fold. This scenario raises many questions, but the most intriguing one concerns the effect it will have on the organic results CTR....

April Fools’ Day 2016: Gmail mic drop prank goes sour, Bing’s dancing puffins & more

Yesterday Google wasted no time getting into the April Fools' Day spirit, making a number of fake announcements before the day even started. It wasn’t even April 1, but being the overachievers they are, Google had already started releasing its April Fools’ Day announcements. Starting yesterday, we spotted a disco-clad pegman on Google Maps, a Google sock-finding app on Google’s Australia blog, and a new “Flick” keyboard from Google Japan. There were also two Gmail hacks that rolled out: an emoji-powered smart reply feature and a “Send + Mic Drop” option. The Gmail mic drop feature had a number of users up in arms after they unwittingly inserted a mic-dropping Minion gif into emails. By this morning, Google had disabled the prank and apologized for causing more headaches than laughs. Bing has opted to stay away from controversy-causing pranks so far, taking a cute approach to April Fools’ Day with dancing puffins featured on its homepage. You can see a rundown of Ap...
